    I would recomend using DVD2AVI for decoding DVDs vobs...

    DVD Decrpytor the vobs to your HD

    SUBRip the vob and extract the subtitles, save them as a common text format, eg. srt, ssa, etc

    run dvd2avi, open the vobs, change IDCT algoritm to IEEE...
    then save project.

    have avisynth 2.5 installed and create a new avs file, load the mpeg2dec3.dll plugin(to read dvd2avi projects), load the LoadPluginEx2.dll plugin(to use avisynth 2.0 plugins), load the textsub.vdf plugin from vobsub, then mpegsource your project file, and the textsub your extracted subtitles. ( you might have to convert to YUV2 to use textsub)

    then open up the avs file with virtualdubmod, and at this stage u can check if the subs r in sync, or u might want to edit the font size, color etc of the sub using subtitleworkshop or substation alpha. u can press F5 in VD to refresh the changes.

    then just compress the video with divx or xvid with fast recompress.

    it looks complicated but this gives the best possible quality dvd rip IMO

      @nithro
      you're right, after subtitles are hard-encoded, you can't change anything (you can set them to whatever you like them to be in the virtualdub_subtitle plugin method though)
