    size & virtual dub

    hello,
I'm trying to convert a XVID encoded movie using VirtualDUB.
The process itself seems to work like a gem .. but I'm wondering why it uses so much space .. the XVID file is approx 700MB but the converted AVI is 69GB !!! ... Am I using some "wrong" settings ??.. or is this just the way it should be ??

I'm a total newbie in this world so any help will be much appreciated

"I'm trying to convert a XVID encoded movie using VirtualDUB."

To what format are you attempting to convert?

"the XVID file is approx 700MB but the converted AVI is 69GB !!!"

You are unwittingly saving the video in UNCOMPRESSED format. In VirtualDub, from under the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Compression" - and choose the codec you wish to use and configure it accordingly.

    Let us know of your success ;>}

thxs a lot for your reply - I'll try it out !! . . in the meantime I've tried using a small conversion programme in which I could change the codec for the *.avi file. ( sorry I can't remember the name of the the programme - and I'm posting form another PC ) ..
I changed the codec from xvid ==> divx .. and magically my burn pgm ( Roxio dvd-builder 6.0 ) was suddenly able to recognize the file - and burned a 100% perfect dvd. - I don't know if this will work for all xvid files - but in this case it did.

        Hi there,

I'm a newbie here too, but combing through these forums I've found a mine of info. I've got a question about the size of Xvid compressed videos as well.
I'm trying to compress a video file using VirtualDub, and have done so wonderfully with the mpeg4 low-motion codec. I was able to calculate the bitrate with the Advanced Bitrate Calculator.
My question is: how do you calculate the bitrate with Xvid? I've looked through the "configuration" option the Xvid codec offers, but nothing seems to indicate how to predict the final file size. Is there an analogous bitrate calculator out there for Xvid? I think I read somewhere that the config options of Xvid should ask me to enter the desired size of the file, and the bitrate will be calculated from there (opposite way round as for the mpeg4 codec, above).

Can anyone help me with this? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

decent tools like DVX will do the calculation and setting of divx oder xvid codec

            Thanks for the advice.

I've seen another program called "Simple DivX" as well. How does it compare with DVX?

              to jimmy:
it sounds to me that you have used some kind of
fourcc changer to "convert" from divx to xvid.....
this normally works fine if the xvid file does not
contain ANY bad frames or corrupted data..

if it does you might encounter sideeffects

when you are using xvid to divx conversion
you could also use the fast recompression method
of virtual dub instead the full processing mode.
but do it only if your movie has bad frames....

by the way....installing the latest alpha version
of ffdshow filter might enable roxio to recognize xvid movies directly ...make sure to set the filter to decode
              xvid after installing...
