MPEG Mediator skips a whole 20 min chunk?

first let me say ive had good experience with this prog in the past, though ive only done one other DVD rip conversion to divx. it was the fast and the furious, and it went very well, ended up being 716mb, fit on a cd, and was a bit less than dvd quality, but very good.

now im trying to do Phone Booth. ive ripped it, and theres 4 VTS_03_*.VOB files (* being the number it is, 1-4) i had DVD decrypter on "select main movie files" and it ripped VTS_03_0.IFO, and as i said, VTS_03_*.VOB <--(1-4) so i check em in winDVD, and its fine, it got all of the movie. the first 3 VOBs are like 1.04 GB (funny it seems every dvd i rip the biggest files are like exactly that size) and the last one is 609 MB. ive tried the conversion like 4 times, but every time (and i did make sure i loaded up all 4 VOBs) it goes fine until i come back later, open the avi, its 374 mb, quality is real nice, but the movie ends at 55 min, instead of the actual end, 81 mins, as printed on the dvd box. it ends where sutherland says "come on stuart you know if you had the chance youd take me down" and "what if i told you im on the fourth floor..." and it ends about there. i found out this is at about im guessing 2/3--3/4 through VTS_03_3.VOB.

why does it quit here? around this area there arent any graphical or playback errors or problems with the VOB in winDVD, so it cant be a file problem. everything is fine (vid/audio sync, picture aspect ratio, quality is nice, etc) but it always seems to cut out right there. ive tried under "configure plugin" in the divx configure options the 1 pass, and multipass, although i think i remember with FNF i did 1 pass. but nothing makes any difference.

im REAL sorry for the long post, but i just want to be as detailed as possible. i hope someone has experience with this prog, i found it and use it because progs like that gordian knot are so packed with settings and are too complicated and it confuses me..

ALSO: could someone tell me what the difference between 1-pass and Multipass is? i noticed theres the option of 1 pass, mutilpass, 1st pass, and multipass, nth pass. <---what is this? could you like make it do 10 passes? what is the point?

thx a ton to all who help

Perhaps a silly question but, how much FREE space do you have on your hard drive?

i got like 30 gig left. that is a reasonable question, i dont always pay attention to that too much, but its my secondary, "junk" 60GB drive, and im not putting tons of stuff on it daily

"now im trying to do Phone Booth, which i rented last night."

I'm sorry, I just noticed that you're referring to "ripping" and converting commercial media that you don't own.

Since this is a violation of the forum rules here, I won't contribute anything further to this thread...

WOW. dr. divx worked great! simple, file was 704 mb, GREAT picture. i cant tell the diff between this and the dvd. but one thing: the auido is very quiet. it was pretty quiet also when ripped from the dvd. why does this happen? it seems to happen on every dvd i rip. is there any way i could like rip the audio from the avi and make it louder and put it back in?

                          hey,
i always keep the original ac3 sound in divx encoded avi files!! most of the dvd's have low volumes, but if u want higher volumes:

U can use VirtualDub (www.virtualdub.com) this way:
                          Load the file, then select
                          video/direct stream copy
                          and
                          audio/ full processing mode
on audio/compression select the same compression-bitrate that u used
on audio/volume select Adjust... and set the slider to 600-800%
                          Then:
                          file/save as avi

This way u won't have any loss of quality

for more info., search in this forum for "volume"!!

lol 800% volume increase is probably over kill and might produce artifact noise in the audio stream, but... you'll have to test it out yourself

And the moral of the story is: If one program doesn't seem to work, always find and try other programs avaliable to do what u want to do. Certain programs maybe have incompaitiblity issues/bugs that are not in other programs.

Well... i was originally gonna post a lengthy reply on the several mean comments to ZondaC before my comp bsod'ed from HD failure... and life's too short so now all i'm gonna say is, good work raju, Newbies like us "WILL" become experts if there are more ppl like raju
