    Best Quality ?

    Do movies compressed with divX or with mpeg-2 have a better quality?

    since divx is mpeg4 they can be much better than the mpeg2 format (keep in mind though that dvd are mpeg2 format as well ) used for svcd.

      I know that if I want to make a svcd the resulution has to be 480x576. But will the quality be better than divX if I create a mpeg-2 file with a higher resolution? A resolution of 720x416 for example ?

        Did you get that backwards? Maybe more compressed, but better quality???

          DivX is not so different from MPEG-2. DivX/MPEG4 is based on the MPEG-2 codec. It's optimized for smaller filesize. The quality in highest bitrate/low-motion is not significant better or worse than MPEG-2. So DivX is only smaller not better but can by same quality as DVD with smaller filesize.
          Comparing SVCD and DivX, DivX is the best except for audio-sync and DVD-compatibilty .

              I did only ask this because I want to get high quality rips of DVDs and I don't know if I should use the divX codec or the mpeg2 codec. The filesize of a two hour rip should be 1300 mb.

                most definitely you shouzld use MPEG4 for that NOT mpeg2
                thus divx (or my favourite m$ v2) should be used as codec!

                  Still, if the source is REALLY good then choose fast motion 6000 bitrate.

                  here is a link for a MPEG2 vid I made, if it doesn't work then please contact me cause I can sort out the problem,

                  This was re-encoded, in MPEG2, 4-5 times (like I said in the other posting) This is a BROADCAST QUALITY VIDEO

                  Damn, link doesn't work, email me (programmer2@another.com) and I will send the link correctly, it is on someone elses server (sorry)

                  I will l8r put up the fast motion version!

                    thank you for your reply techno but I think the email address you've written is wrong. Could you please send me the right link to the video to Assault@ngi.de? And could you please explain how you exactly rip your movies? You said that you re-encodes your movies 4-5 times in mpeg2. How does this work?
                    thank you

                      Hi there, I don't rip dvd's (never have done! But I will l8r)

                      I capture videos from TV and then encode directly to MPEG2, do this about 3-4 times until it is good and brilliant quality, then to DIVX fast motion 6000 bitrate:

                            I don't think so. UncasMS said divX is the hacked mpeg4 codec but there's a difference between them. Mpeg4 v2 doesn't create macroblock faults like divX low motion does.

                              there is no difference!

                              MS MPEG 4 (hacked) is DIVX

                              v2 = low motion
                              v3 = fast motion

                              when people say "MS-MPEG 4v2" they mean DIVX low motion, ask anybody!
