hi there, hopes im not duplicating here, and i apologize if i am, what my question is , im using tmpgenc to convert avi to mpg, for full divx movies, however if i just want clips out of particular divx movies, am i still required to convert the whole file to mpg, or is there a way around this. my standalone dvd player does play mpg files....thanks in advance for your help...mike

u can use virtualdub or like to open ur avi file and save the clips u want. then make mpeg out of it/them.
Seems like as soon you buy somehing, v. 2 comes out 1.5 times as fast!..!

no idea if tmpeg might let you select a range of the file to be converted, but you could open your avi in virtualdubMOD, make your selection and save the marked framerange to a new file that will be converted afterwards via tmpeg.

selecting/cutting with virtualdubmod is similar to what i've described here:

Cutting with VirtualDub (or any of its variants)

1)Load your original (DivX-compressed or otherwise) .AVI into VirtualDub
          2) Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying"
          3) Move slider to the starting point of the scene you wish to delete
          4) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Go to next keyframe"
          5) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
          6) Move slider to the ending point of the scene you wish to delete
          7) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Go to next keyframe"
          8) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End'
          9) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Delete frames"

(Repeat steps 3-9 for each part of the video you do NOT wish to retain)

          10) Save with a new filename

            results

ok so i tryed the steps, which seem opposite of tmpgenc, which require you to cut the scenes you wanna save , right. vdub, you cut the scenes u wish to delete and you save the rest. i had to take direct video of to save also because this setting wouldnt allow me to save the file..i originally started with an mpg which had to be interweaved i guess the process is called..thanks again for your help..mike

you can use TMPGEnc to select a part of the file to encode, using the source range. or if the file is already an MPEG file, you can cut that part out and save it in another MPEG file using the MPEG Tools in the file menu and then selecting merge & cut on the tab
