Can not encode AVI files

When trying to encode a file as AVI, it does not matter what encoding program I use, for example DVDx, when i hit the "encode" button, a message like "Cannot open AVI file" pops-up. On the other hand if I encode as MPEG, it works OK.

With Easydivx after decripting, the message is "According to the registry, the type of file specified in AVIFileOpen does not have a handler to process it"

Does someone know how to fix this bug?

in case you're dealing with avi, load that file into in virtualdubmod
go to file => file information

You seem to miss the point. Even telling that the file is not found, the encoder does NOT build a file. This is the main problem and the question is : why does it NOT build the file?

Yes, I tried several encoders - all of them give simmilar mgs - AVI file not found or can not build AVI file or even collapse......

I used

1 - Easy DivX - After decripting, the msg is " According to the registry, the type of file specified in AVIFileOpen does not have a handler to process" and then the program crashes

2 - FlaskIt - Hitting Flaskit there appears an AVIPlugInError pop-up with the msg "AVI file open doesn´t worked. VFW error code: 80040154"

3- DVDx - hitting Encode the following msg pops-up "Cannot open AVI file" Hitting OK, the program crashes.

Where does your file originate?
You say it works in mpeg?
Considering DVD requires MPEG2, what format are you aiming for?

The file originates from a VOB ifo file on a DVD movie

Yes, it works if I set for VCD or SVCD conversion but fails if I try to convert to AVI (does not matter what codec I specify)

Another interesting point is that I tryed DVDx on WIN 98SE - and it worked!! The problem is only if I use WIN XP !!!!!

TMPGEnc accepts VOBs I gather.
Since you already have a DVD structure why are you changing it?

The idea is to convert a DVD movie directly to DIVX in order to burn a CDROM, not a DVD. But since it seems impossible to do that on WIN XP I will stick to WIN 98SE for the job or alternatively, will stay with MPEG1 files, that seem to be as good as AVI files.

maybe you should try something like gordianknot/autoGK or DVX or dvdtoogm to convert dvd => avi/ogm
