Best DVD to Divx converter program

Sorry, I'm a real newb at converting dvd to divx. There are many programs out there that say they can convert dvd's to divx so that the movie can fit on 1 or 2 cd's but I don't know which one to pick. Which program do you guys think is the best? Are there any free ones? Thanks.

best results with "xvid", not "divx"

true, however, he did ask for the best . gordian knot is quite easy once you read a certain guide on http://www.divx-digest.com , but you may want to start out on "autogk" first, like guada said

Thanks a lot for your suggestions guys. I will try all. This is actually for a school project, where I will have to take segments from various movies and compile all on one dvd. I'm looking for the easiest way to do this. I'm sure it's not very hard and I wish I had some experience at this so I wouldn't have to come at you asking for you to teach me from scratch. I would greatly appreciate any help so I can get this project done.

What actually would be ideal is a way to take out clips from each dvd. Would there be a way to do this without having to go through converting the whole dvd to avi, and than using virtual dub to take the clips that I need? Is there a way to take clips of the dvd's without even having to do any converting? I'm not worried about quality that much, as long as it's decent cuz' I'm gonna be showing this in a presentation to my class.

1) Your need has nothing to do with .AVIs (DivX-compressed or otherwise).

2) Use (FREEWARE) DVD Shrink, in the "Re-author" mode to accomplish your task

Thanks a lot for your help. Was actually not as hard as I feared it would be. Only problem now is, I need this clips to play in powerpoint. I guess I'll have to convert to avi.

You're just full of surprises - Use VirtualDubMOD (Different than standard VirtualDub) or MPEGMediator (Load .VOBs sequentially) to convert the .VOB files of your DVD clips to .AVI...

Now I know this is a really old thread but I just found it in a search and I thought I'd throw in my two cents.

My favorite video "editor" (though that's not exactly what it was created for) is VirtualDub. I love it for cutting out frames and re-encoding videos. Also, I really like Flask, but lately I keep having issues with it crashing while encoding videos with the "Fraunhofer IIS MP3 (Professional)" codec. It's quite frustrating. Anyway, I hope someone find this useful. -Cheers
