    Best Divx conversion tool

Generally what's thought of to be the best? I have Dr. Divx, I use autoGK with DVD Decrypter, I've used nero recode, etc. The best?

To be a bit more specific - what's the best no matter the level of skill needed to use the tool and what's the bests one or two click solution?

best quality/speed : 'gordian knot', in conjunction with either xvid or x264

best one/two-click solution: 'auto gordian knot'

Interesting - didn't realize there was a non "auto" gk.

As a one click solution, how does FU Wizard compare?

And x264? That better than xvid?

Staxrip huh - will check that out.

I ask such questions because I don't trust my eyes - I mean, I have fine eyes but don't think I can tell the difference bet. good and better.

never heard of 'FU wizard'. but i don't think it would come close to either GK or DVX, especially if its anything like one of those commercial apps.

x264 gives higher quality than xvid, but takes more time to encode & huge processing power to decode (play). IMO avoid using it for high res stuff (anything dvd res+), unless you mind not playing it for a couple of years until you get a PC capable of comfortably playing it

Thanks for the x264 info!! I think I'll stay away for now - or maybe give it a try just for fun. My laptop's pretty speedy (an XPS GEN2) so it might be able to come close to handling it.

Lastly, if one uses GK as opposed to Auto GK, is it just that you have to tweak a lot of settings?

Checking out Staxrip now. If you want to rip from a DVD, do you just highlight the first file in the video_ts folder?

oh i've heard of fair use, just never used it...

that's a nice laptop by the way, but graphics cards cannot help you here! its raw cpu power that will do the trick

                  my previous athlon64 3200+ (venice) couldn't handle 1280x720 x264. chugged along horribly...

                    It's got a 2.13 ghz Pentium M - but I guess that won't cut it

I've never been a Dell fan - build my own desktops and my last and first laptop was an IBM Thinkpad. Then I decided I wanted something with some juice and the media center os (which really doesn't matter much) and lights that change color and ended up with the xps, and I'm very, very happy with it. Needed it for work, and it's working out great.

Btw, Staxrip keeps saying I don't have the correct versions of certain programs it's installed (BeSweet?) and asks if I want to use the wrong version - yes? It says if I click "download" it will install the correct version, but it doesn't seem to do so.

It's actually giving me problems with xvid and a lot more, too - as far as versions go...

There was a bug, I hope latest version works better.

...I like very much ARCalculator (with AVSOptimizer and HybridFUPP enabled) - takes double encoding time compared to AutoGK, but the results are great --- http://www.canalxvid.com/
