    Gordian Knot: pixel resize filter

I have been having a hard time converting a 90 minute dvd to a 700MB Divx (or Xvid) file. The final quality is very low, big square pixels.

Using Gordian Knot, is the problem the Resize Filter? It was auto-set on Lanczos (sharp). Any suggestions?

Should I pick aother Resize Filter (I am outputting to 720X480 - same as DVD)? Should I Inverse Telecine?

    thx,
    tg

lanczos is absolutely fine - you're using a way too high resolution!

blockiness is usually caused by low bitrate (likely this is the culrpit, especially at that res & movie length), as well as xvid settings. lanczos is fine

      reduce resolution, increase bitrate

for highest quality (xvid), go: H.263 matrix (for 1-cd rips. MPEG for 2-cd), set motion precision & VHQ at max, chroma motion & optimizer enabled, 2 max bframes, enable trellis. keyframe interval at fpsx10, VHQ for bframes

enable qpel & gmc if you have the time & don't mind losing standalone compatibility.

also make sure you have the latest version (xvid 1.1 was released recently)
