animated movies are difficult to rip

Because of the uniform colors of animated movies, I find it harder to transform into divX than a classical movie.

I noticed that, when I could use a 800 bitrate for a classical movie, I got a piece a shit result for an animated movie at the same bitrate, because of colors.

Does anyone know some good parameters (other than birate) that could noticabily improve animated movies quality ?

    Thanks
PS : excuse my poor english

What encoding steps did you take? That would be a good beginning.

Sorry, but what do you mean by "encoding steps" ?

      I can tell you, I work with DivX4.12, 2 passes, and with the codec default parameters (I mean for Data Rate Control : 12 / 2 / 2000 / 10 / 20).

I also use FlaskMpeg 0.594 in HQ bicubic mode, TCDi MMX.

With clasical movies, those parameters are plenty satisfying to me.

      Does it help you ?

I think cartoons are encoded best with nandub. If you want low bitrates it helps a lot to reduce the resoluton (to 512x.. or lower) and use a smoothing-filter. You should also use a very low minimum bitrate to waste no space on still images.

I agree with benderman. You may also want to use bilinear resizing as well to soften the video so that it is more easily compressible.

            use nandub temporal smoother
            works tonnes good for anime
            is it american cartoons?
coz then it is easier since less action
            than anime

A lower resolution, like Benderman suggested, is essential especially if you are not using a high amount of bitrate (What is it anyway?).

Maybe it's time for an Avatar change...

                          Cute enough, heh?

p.s. Wonder why so few people here use an Avatar. I know of one forum, where the ones without an avatar are a minority.

Let's re-run through what you did. What resolution did you use? and if I remember correctly, you did cut out the intro and end credits as well, right?

p.s. I have worked on a few Eva episodes before and they are very easy to compress. Not sure about Nadesico, as I've not watched it before nor ripped any of its DVDs.
