    Fast encoding with AMD XP

    Hi everyone,
Does someone know how to encode DVDs to DivX with the best quality and the fastest way with an AMD XP 1600+

I bought this processor beacause I saw on www.tomshardware.com that they reached 21.4 Frames/second while encoding with FlaskMPEG.

Can you reach that speed too ? I only get between 9 and 11 frames/second.

If someone knows how to convert that fast please send me a mail.

    Thank you

P.S. I use Xmpeg ( faster than FlaskMPEG in my case )

What iDCT are you using? I use Miha's Fast iDCT, downloadable from this site I believe though I don't have the link handy and I gotta get to work soon =)

I also use Miha's Fast iDCT but still slow as 10-11fps
I know that this iDCT is optimized for Intel processors anyway.

How much fps do you get ?

I use "MCMAB 3DNOW Enh." iDCT with SSE Bicubic filtering and I get about 11-12fps.
I think the framerates in the test at Toms Hardware were with no audio encoding, but I don't know if that makes such a big difference though...
I can imagine that memory and mainboard/chipset can make some difference - but certainly not a 2-fold difference! I have a MSI K7T266 Pro2 with 256Mb DDR SDRAM (and an XP 1600+ of course...).

Strange, I really can't understand how they got 21.4 fps.
I sent them an e-mail but they didn't answer yet.
Hope they will, so I can share the information with you.
Anyway for the moment I'm a little bit disappointed in converting into DivXs.
Athlon XP it's sure faster than my old PIII 1000Mhz but I've been expected more than this.

no offence mate, but flask aint very fast.

            using mpeg2avi i will easily reach 20-25 fps on a tb 1200@1333/1400!

that is without sound encoding, of course.

maybe your ram timing, hdd speed or system background activities cause this bad speed!?

Ok I'll try Mpeg2avi. Hope it will work.
And I'll also try to change my CAS letancy from 3T to 2T
              normally it should be faster.

Anyway, I still have SDRAM. How much does DDRAM increase the speed then ?

              Thank you.

Wow, that's a considerable difference! But what's the catch? Is the quality the same as in Xmpeg/Flask?

                  1. don't get me wrong, guys

i wasnt saying mpeg2avi is the solution to all your probs, but flask is painfully slow!!

                  2. mpeg2avi cannot de-interlace. therefore, for some titles it will not be a good choice.

                  3. your pc should be faster than 9-11 fps with a powerfull machine like the one you have got!!
                  EVEN with flask!!!!

4.mpeg2avi's quality is fine, nandub's is better

                  5. for a guide on how I'D USE m2a, take a look at my page.
take care, however, i dont deal with ntsc material or ivtc using m2a!

moreover the dualoutput i prefer is NOT available in version 0.1.5.D (which WAS NOT WRITTEN BY PX3 but ogo!!!) for dualoutput use 0.1.5.A

                  6. the best tool i could think of is NANDUB
on my machine i get some 10-15 fps

                    I made a quick test using MPEG2AVI and I got 25-30fps...

                      doesnt surprise me

m2a is by far the fastest tool available

                      which codec did you use??????

                        I used the 4.11 codec.

When I tested Xmpeg 4.2 with no audio decoding and using the Bressenham filtering method I got around 20fps.

                          nice to know

i havent used m2a for quite some time now, but above all i did NOT test divx4.x with m2a!

                          so how was your result?
                          did you use multipass?

                            No, I didn't use multipass.
The quality isn't bad but I think it looks better in Xmpeg at the same bitrate.
