Need to convert to Divx 6.0

I have gone through that manual earlier. They mention DivX 6 may be because that was the latest version of DivX when the player was launched. It DOES NOT MEAN DivX 7 is not supported. As I said earlier, DivX or XviD are NOT formats. The format is MPEG4 ASP. DivX or XviD are merely the codecs. Both have to adhere to the standards laid down for the MPEG4 ASP formats. But DivX media file is a different thing altogether. That will have the extension .divx instead of .avi. If your player plays DivX encoded avi, it should also play XviD encoded avi.
I have uploaded 2 small files( from my trek video) encoded with both XviD and DivX. You try to play them and report back.

It is stil somehow confusing though. If you say that it shouldn't matter the version of divx codec....then why a file encoded with dr. divx, which uses a Divx5, is playable and a file encoded with the latest divx converter, which uses Divx 7, is not?!

If the problem is with the .avi extension.... could I just change to .divx ??? (just a thought...could be stupid )

The last thought is not stupid. But we will come to it later. It will also involve something called "FourCC".

the divx file does play!!!
xvid file does not play!!!

Open the XviD file with this. Then ,in the box marked "FourCC used codec" write DX50 and click Apply. Now try to open the XviD in your player and report.

paglamon... yesterday.... I foudn this program through the internet and did already what you said with another xvid file that I had. However, instead of writing DX50... I wrote DIVX....the device could play it!!

I suppose this is a solution then!!

Please confirm if I understand correctly:
1.All the .avi files can be used with this programm (cause .avi files are either divx or xvid)
2.It doesn't matter which version of divx codec I use if I encode to divx...

1. Not ALL avi files. But all avi files encoded with XviD or DivX(i.e. all MPEG4 ASP files in avi container).
2. That's what I was saying all along.

You can also try changing FourCC to DX50. It seems your player can understand the FourCC DIVX or DX50.(The file that you could originally play, REVAMPED, had the FourCC DX50 ).

Glad that everything worked out fine. And now YOU can advise others who face this sort of a problem because of the salesman's lack of knowledge.

Could I encode a movie using different profile in Divx 7 (let's say Hd profile or something else in order not to lose quality) and then just change the FourCC... will it still play it??

Changing FourCC does not change any parameter in the file(other than just fooling the player to recognise a specific identity code). The file still MUST comply with the different parameters. Now,what parameters a player will accept vary. Some players will play files with GMC,QPEL etc.Others will not. So,to ensure that most(if not all) players can play the file,it will be better to stick to the Home theatre profile(in DivX). Sometimes the player manual categorically mentions which parameters are needed in avi files for them to play.My LG DVD player clearly says that it does not support GMC or QPEL and resolution MUST NOT be greater than standard DVD resolution(i.e 720 x 576). But you can try on a rewritable disc and see what happens.
