dvd to mp3 conversion

I want to convert a dvd concert to an audio cd that I can play in my car. Sounds simple enough, I have tried all different types of ripping, dycrypting softwares and can't seem to get it right.

Using free software, what is the best way to achieve this?

My first thought is to save the dvd to an MPEG4 and go from there. I'm confused which move to make next.

I'm getting frustrated. Help.
