I think most would agree the video quality is better using DivX 3.11 over 4.??... but how is the new 5.02 codec compared to the 3.11? I haven't tried the new one yet.
3.11 vs 5.02

Here is a fast motion shot done in Divx 3 and 5, using the same bitrate and everything, and I followed Doom9's guide.Attached FilesComment

Here is the divx 3 shot. As you can see, Divx5 is far superior in fast motion scenes, and keeps up wih divx 3 in low motion scenes.Attached FilesComment

Not all codecs work great on some material, like anime. It's a matter of experimenting and knowledge and thurough testing.
I mean, I use fast motion ALL the time (3.11alpha), it gives me NEAR DVD (no artifacts) quality 95% of the time, and I am happy, cause I found my own method of making it look great.
It's upto u folks but I prefere 3.11alpha

This is actually great shot, that displays both the strengths and weaknesses of both codecs.
Divx3 messes up completly along the sharp edges, this is of course very visible.
Divx5 looks much better along the sharp edges, but has slightly less detail on the evenly colored surfaces. Such as the wall in the background.
Which divx5 settings did you use ?, B-frames, GMC, Q-pel ?.
If you used B-frames and we are looking at an I-frame or P-frame, divx5 has the advantage that it can afford about 10-35 % more bits on this frame.Last edited by khp; 14 Jul 2002, 02:06 AM.Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.

>Sorry man, even if it were better, its allways wise to go for the most compatible or "popular".
Compatible? XviD is Mpeg4-compatible, so even the DivX 5 decoder should play it. I don't know why it would need to be popular unless you're trying to share or download movies.
>Thats why alost all of us have Windows even though Linux is far superior.
I think this has more to do with the fact that Microsoft has held a tight grip on the computer industry for years now. Windows has had forever to develop and to entrench itself in the computing field. And then everything became dependent on Microsoft and Microsoft became a monopoly. Making it harder to replace Windows with Linux.Comment
