NEED BIG HELP FROM GURU's like UNCASMS

    Hi there.

no offence to the people who I said are not guru's, give it a try if u want too.

unfortunatly, a capture software overwrote my important captured work

I cannot capture it again, ever

I remembered I edited the footage then saved it as a different name, deleted it and emptied the recycle bin.

I got data recovery software, I think I recovered it but not sure, I really pray it is, REALLY.

unfortunatly, WMP can't play it, TMPGENC or VD can't recognise the format thus does not open, WME can't encode it.

Is there a way to repair this AVI? I mean, it's not a DIVX file - no wait, it might be the file, it should be, cause I edited it and compressed to DIVX, anyway, I used DIVFIX but says it's invalid avi format.

ANY OTHER WAY? PLEASE!!!??? I think the header may be corrupted, can it be repaired, if not all then some?

    PLEASE?

    Thank-you

      How do you mean?

If I just open this recovered video in VD or nandub, it says that it cannot determine the type of xxxxxxx.avi and that's it.

What else can I do? There MUST be something

A damaged header file would be nearly impossible to fix. I don't think anything exists to fix it.

        >I remembered I edited the footage then saved it as a different name, deleted it and emptied the recycle bin.

How many days between the deletion and the recovery? If it's more than a few and you've been very busy on your computer...

I am sure u can fix corrupted header files.....but then again I could be wrong.

I know about if u overwrite the area of the hdd where that particular file was kept, then u cant recover it, really, depends on the strength of the software!

I really haven't been working much on this particular hdd but I don't think the file has been over written, I MAY have recovered it, but if so, the header is damaged and needs repairing.

          Any ideas?

Load the file into your favorite hex editor, and load another good avi file, created in exactly the same way as the damaged file, for comparison. And start working ....

But of course you will need huge amounts of luck to get this to work.

Hey techno, what's wrong with you? A hex-editor is a good way to repair an header.

As gldblade already stated, there is no tool that will do this automatically, I'am sure he would know if there was.

Manual recovery is your only chance.

But remember to make a backup of the damaged file, before making any changes. So you can undo any mistakes.

what recovery software did you use?
Lost & Found works flawlessly, all you have to do after that is rename to the long name format.
So if it doesnt want to open it its bc it was not recovered completely.

The only bad thing about Lost & Found is that its slow. I mean 20 hours to recover slow. But this is a good thing bc it means that it ACTUALLY READS THE HARD DRIVE, not the allocation table. So pretty much if your hard drive can spin and the reading head works, you will get your file recovered.

youre gonna need a destination drive to put your lost files in, it cant put it in the source hard drive

                          yeh, I know that.

                          I have 4 hdd's

I mean, I do have my own business for PC's but never done data recovery as not many "locals" do it. But if this does work then we have an option to do data recovery

but if it doesn't work, is there any way at all for fixing the header file?

Lost and Found has been my first and last resort every time i do data recovery. It hasnt failed me once. the only time it hasnt worked it wasnt even lost and founds fault, the file was currupt in the f¡rst place.
