what is the difference between MPEG4 video and MP4 video?

From what I researched, .mp4 is the official file extension for MPEG-4 Part 14 files. They are pretty much the same thing.

when i try to play in DVD player it is showing UN Known Disc what is the solution?

File extensions
While the only official file extension defined by the standard is .mp4, various file extensions are commonly used to indicate intended content:

Audio-only MP4 files generally have a .m4a extension.
MP4 files with audio streams encrypted by FairPlay Digital Rights Management as sold through the iTunes Music Store use the .m4p extension.
Audio book and podcast files, which also contain metadata including chapter markers, images, and hyperlinks, can use the extension .m4a, but more commonly use the .m4b extension.
MP4 files with audio and video generally use the .mp4 and .m4v extensions, occasionally .mp4v.

Your DVD player can play only MPEG4 in an AVI container(XviD or DivX encoded) and not in MP4 container. So ,you have to encode your videos accordingly.

MPEG-4 could refer to any part of the standards, so container, subtitles, systems, video (Part 2 and Part 10), audio, etc.

As per above though, MPEG4 generally refers to a DivX/Xvid/mp3/AC3 avi of which only the video and mp3 audio are covered by MPEG-4 specs and only if the video doesn't use packed bitstream or isn't DivX 3.

You may be able to get away without re-encoding at least the video. Chances are that it is AVC though, but you never know.
