Avi to dvd-r with sound

Is it even possible to convert a avi movie to .m2v & .ac3 so it can be burned onto a dvd-r ? i have been trying for 2 weeks now with no success except for converting the video that worked the audio will not convert to ac3? can anyone help???

Sonic Factory's SoftEncode...

Then again, .mp2 audio should be fine for a conversion from .AVI to DVD-R.
