Problems with VBR mp3 as audio codec

Hi

I have a few divx films that were encoded on a mac. The video plays fine in windows media player, however the player attempts to locate a codec but fails and there is therefore no sound...

Virtual dub will not open the file at all.

The sound plays fine on Quicktime for windows, but alas, there is no video. At least in quicktime i can view the codec information.
The audio codec is mp3 codec (i have the radium release installed) but is VERIABLE BIT RATE... standard Mp3 as a divx soundtrack is fine in media player, and so is vbr playback if it is an mp3 file, but does not work as a divx soundtrack..

Any ideas??

Although VBR .MP3 audio should NOT be a playback problem when interleaved with DivX-compressed video. I'd suggest that you do the following in order to convert .AVIs with VBR-MP3 Audio:

Simply use VirtualDub to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
Load your original .AVI into VirtualDub
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save WAV" (Enter a new filename with a ".WAV" extender).Click on "OK"
Then set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
Then save the .AVI as a silent .AVI (set "Audio" to "No audio" after you've saved the WAV file).

Then close VirtualDub and restart it
Set "Audio" to "No audio"
Load your silent .AVI
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
Under "Audio" click on "WAV Audio" and load your .WAV
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose the appropriate .MP3 settings. Click on "OK"
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" and save your file with a new filename.


As an alternative, if you have the Professional version of Quicktime, look into extracting the audio track and converting it to another format (e.g. AIFF).

nice sounding suggestion, only i cannot even open the file in virtualdub as it "cannot determine file type"..
which leads me to think that the mac encoder being used is not placing any codec information in the file header....??

Anyway, i do not believe it would be able to strip the audio as a wav, as it is never played in the first place
