    Big AVI 27gig to DVD

Please help. I am trying to convert a big family film into a DVD. This film came from a VCR and it can be played with windows media player. I need some way to compress it and put it on a 4.7 gig DVD. I am new at this and really want to preserve my old family films for the future.

What are the video and audio formats of the 27Gig file?

        A) use VirtualDub to split your .AVI into two hour segments, as follows:

        Splitting with VirtualDub or NanDub

1)Load your original (DivX-compressed or otherwise) .AVI into VirtualDub or NanDub
        2) Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying"
        3) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
        4) Move slider to approximate halfway point
        5) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Go to next keyframe"
        6) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End'
        7) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" - Save as a new filename (e.g. "Movie1of2.avi").
        8) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
        9) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Move to End"
        10) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End"
        11) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" - Save as a new filename (e.g. "Movie2of2.avi").

        B) Use TMPGEnc (use its DVD "wizard"/template) to create the required separate video and audio files

        C) Use a DVD authoring program (e.g. DVD Wise) to create your DVD(s)

Alternatively, you could purchase Phillip's standalone DVD burner. It connects directly to your VCR and contains software to automatically create DVDs from your videotape(s)...

It was a great learning experiance and it worked. Now I have another problem. I have a NEC DVD burner and when I ted to burn my master piece (Ha Ha) I put my expensive dvd burnable disk in and it comes back no media is detected. Does that mean I have to run a certain kind of writable disk for my NEC DVD RW???

Glad to hear it (especially the "it worked" part ;>})!
