I have been having trouble with playing back DivX AVI's on both my laptops...
When I play the movies I find the audio plays at a normal rate but the video lags further and further behind throughout the movie...
The other night it was so bad that I had to play the sound on one laptop and the video on the other and keep pausing alternating laptops for them other to catch up again !!! VERY frustrating...
I have a Sony Vaio PCG-Z505S and a Compaq Armarda 1598DT
Both machines are running Windows 98 Second Edition with all the available Windows Updates installed.
It doesn't seem to matter whether the movie is played off the hard disk or if I burn it to CD and play it from there, but the CD seems to play the video a bit nicer off CD than off the Sony's hard disk.
I don't have the Compaq with me for the specs, but the specs on the Sony are thus:
Video: NeoMagic MagicMedia256AV
Hard Disk: Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
Monitor: Laptop Display Panel (1024x768) (Win98 SE drivers)
Audio: NeoMagic MagicMedia 256 Audio
CPU: Intel Celeron 333MHz
RAM: 192 MB
I'm using Windows Media Player to play the files, I've tried IrfanView - the video was fine but there was no sound.
I first tried using the 3.11 DivX codec because these guys suggested it: http://www.divx-digest.com/help.html#2a
Then when that didn't work I uninstalled it and downloaded 4.12 and installed that... same problem...
Any Ideas ?
I've looked on the web and find lots of people talking about syncing problems... what is it with this codec ?
Is there nothing to tie the time of the video to the time of the audio like a video track and an audio track sitting separately in the file and just expect to happen in sync - or does the player peel the two apart and send them both at their respective hardware without checking to see if it's been processed and it's spooling up because it's not being handled fast enough...???
If that's the case is there no packet control ???
Anyone know how I can fix it ?
