Laptop vs. PC Playback Issues, Help!

I recently got a new Laptop, but it sucks at playing .avi/divx movies. The problem is that the screen is noticeably pixelated while playing any type of video, BUT, when I plug the laptop into a standerd moniter, the quality immeadietly improves. I know my codecs are fine (I have ffdshow, and the latest XviD update), but something about the refresh rate maybe or something. I have plenty of processer power/ddr ram, and I am running windows XP. What could be the problem. Please Help! Thanks.

Try changeing the desktop color depth.

Mouse Right click on the background, select properties->settings, and change the color quality setting.
Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.

Already tried that, I have switched between 16 bit and 32 bit, but no luck.

"but something about the refresh rate maybe or something"

So, HAVE you tried increasing the refresh rate to the highest allowable rate for the reolution being used?

Have you tried lowering the desktop resolution?

I have to admit that the picture quality on laptop screen really sucks. I have Sony Vaio GRX 560 with 16'' screen and ATI 7500 32MB dedicated and everytime I watch DivX and even DVD, it drives me bloody crazy. No matter how right the codec I installed, everything stays the same. It's as not as the old Pen III with 14" CRT screen I owned before.

I had the opportunity to try a COMPAQ and HP laptop, and I experienced no problems with divx/xvid, (s)vcd and dvd playback.
