Xvid and directX 9 problem?

Xvid works find, but when install directX 9 it stop working,
it doesnt play Xvid video at all, wonder if anyone else has this problem, and what can i do about it,

I've also installed DirectX 9.0 and now suddenly my XVID encoded movies won't play either.

I can open them with any util that reads the movies raw and builds an index for them on-the-fly. But any media player that goes via DirectShow can't open any XVID movie anymore.

It looks like DirectShow has changed in DirectX 9.0 and now the XVID codecs are no longer DirectShow compatible.

I'm guessing that the XVID boys will need to update their codes to be compatible with DirectX 9.0.

Till then, it looks like there isn't much that we can do.

I don't have this problem, not with any of the latest XVID builds or ffdshow. Try installing the latest version of ffdshow.

Hmmm, just downloaded the latest ffdshow about an hour ago and tried it, but no luck.

It's really weird though, because DivX movies are fine and so everything else really. I've tried all the latest XVID binaries and no luck.

The exact error message is "Unknown file format : XVID".

That's bull though, because if I check it with Gspot or AVICodec it is definitely XVID. Also, it plays perfectly through AVIPreview or Virtualdub. DirectX 9.0 is definitely screwing with something, but I don't know what.

If I've installed ffdShow, must I reboot for it to take affect properly?

Make sure you have the latest builds of XVID and FFDSHOW.

If that fails to remedy the situation, change the fourcc code to dx50 so that the divx 5.02 pro decoder is used to playback xvid content.

I've definitely got both the latest ffdshow and XVID (nics ver) installed. It KEEPS ON telling me "Unknown File Format (XVID)".

This is REALLY annoying. The thing is, I'm not exactly a rank amatuer at this either and I have my system prepped for playing movies properly. I swear on my life this same movie played perfectly in BSPlayer with DirectX 8.1.

All other movies are fine too. I've tried changing the FourCC to DivX instead, but I get the SAME message with DivX in the brackets instead of XVID. Personally I think the error message is a load of crap and it's not actually telling me what the real problem is.

I'm guessing that the actual read of the header of the file is failing or something, or maybey the init of the DirectShow filter is failing ?

If AVIPreview and VDub can read it fine then clearly the movie is OK, so something must be getting messed up when DirectShow talks to the XVID codec then ?

Any more suggestions ? Come on gurus, fix this goldarn thing !

I just tried changing the fourcc used codec to dx50, and to experiment I set the fourcc description code to CASE.

Now I get the same "Unknown file format" message but with CASE in brackets.

So basically it's falling over before it gets anywhere near the codec, it's crashing when it looks at the FourCC description already.

Does that shed anymore light on the subject ?

I get the same error message ... You just need to install an XviD decoder ( Koepi's build ), and for sure install this version of ffdshow :

i don´t have thos probs i have the newest DX9.0c installed and the xvid videos are working fine.
