xVid playback image is garbled

I've downloaded several divx movies from WinMX and they cam e through fine. Excellant quality. I then downloaded signs and 8mile 3 different times, making sure that I was not grabbing the ssame download as before. Both signs and 8mile are using the xVid codec. I've downloaded the codec, but when I play 8mile with my divx playerm or wmp9, or with gdivx player the movie is very garbled. Almost like I'm viewing it through a kaleidoscope. At times the video almost clears up, but then it goes bad again.

With signs the whole movie is garbled and green.

Any suggestions as to what I should do to try to get these to work?
