Can Divx movies be played on a DVD player?

Hi, I want to know if there is some way to make a Divx movie to play on a Stand Alone DVD Player, which only supports: VCD,SVCD,CD,CD-R,DVD,JPG.

no, but you can convert your movie to s(vcd) format and play it on your dvd player.

I recently invested in a dvx/mpeg4 dvd player. Mine is a pretty good one and only cost £50. If you go on Pricerunner website you can search for divx dvd players and some start at about £35-40. Well worth it.

I own a Pioneer DVD player that can play DivX (as well as XviD) shows. At just a bit more than a typical player, it's certainly very well worth the money and beats viewing AVIs on PC monitors (and even the standard-quality TV-Out).

Is your drive by chance the "Pioneer DV 575"?

A Pioneer DV 676A.

It plays everything a DVD player is expected to support, plus DivX/XviD-encoded files, SACD and DVD-A. Not to mention it sounds terrific and displays excellent picture.

Some, but not all - The details are in the documentation that came with your DVP642 player...

Okay thanks, but say it doesn't play the xvid codec is there a way I can un-encode the file then re-encode it with divx?

Yes - By using VirtualDubMOD (You must, of course, have a DivX codec and an XviD codec installed)...

@ setarip I haven't had any problem playing any of my xvid avi's yet. I know some ppl have stated they have problems playing some xvid's that have something to do with quantization or something I can't remember what. I've read somewhere (can't remember where now) about a program that corrected this program without having to re-encode.

Question: do know of such a program or what I'm talking about? Thanx in advance.

The docs for the Philips DVP 642 state that it does not support either "GMC" (Global Motion Compensation) or "Q-Pel (Quarter Pixel)...
