Virus???

ok, i can't believe that this could be true myself, but i have no other explanation...
i wanted to watch this avi file and all of a sudden my pc starts working and working and doesn't seem to stop. it's like everything is frozen then, except for the fact that the hard drive is still making noices. after restarting i open the windows task manager (in xp) and watch the page file usage meter. as soon as i double click the file, the meter rises up to 985 mb!! instead of the usual 165 mb with other avi files. now the scary part comes... after another reboot, i try to erase it and the meter goes up again and a message comes that i can't erase the file because it's being used by another programm or it's protected, which neither of both is true. anyways, i hope somebody could help me here.

If you want to erase the file make sure that the "preview" in Windows Explorer is turned off (in the preview section you can play the movie).

thanx, but i tried that already. the error message still comes and the page files usage still rises to over 900 mb...

Try "dragging and dropping" the file to the recycle bin.

Pres crtl+alt+delete to make sure back ground applications are not making use of the file.

yeah, that helped! there was a process, probably the real media player, that was somehow still hanging in to playing the file. i just terminated it and voila... it worked!

I had this happen to me before too and i couldn't drag it into the trash bin. I had to ctrl-alt-del and shutdown EXPLORER. Then I clicked NEW TASK, browsed to the location of the video file, highllighted it and deleted it. Then I typed in EXPLORER.EXE and everything was back to normal. Hope this helps others that have this problem.
