MPEG2 Encoding/capturing

Hi,
We're using a cheap Dazzle card right now to capture in as MPEG2 directly. I am hoping on replacing that with a slightly better system. Does anyone have any suggestions on what we could get for capturing in?

We have considered going DV via firewire in... If we did, capturing in to MPEG would require some editing software to convert it. Do you have any recomendations on what easy software we could use to capture MPEG2/-1 in via firewire?

You are using the Dazzle card presumably because you are "capturing" from an analogue device (camcorder/VCR). The analogue video needs to be converted to digital so that it can be manipulated by further editing if required.
If you convert to DV (ie Digital Camcorder, then you do not require a "capture" device. You video is automatically compressed down to DV (5:1) inside the camera and requires only to be transferred to your PC. Firewire or 1394 is used only for transferrring video. If you want to edit your DV video, then what you require is an "editing" facility.
