conversion from asf to mpg

I tried to convert a asf file to mpg using TMPGEnc but it crashed.So
i used asf tools to converted it to avi and then TMPGEnc to convert it from avi to mpg but the output file had no sound at all.
What i`m doing wrong?

What was the format of the audio in the .AVI that you created?

The avi file that came up from the asf tools has s-mpeg4 version 3 video format and 0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3 audio format (accordingly to gspot).I used virtualdub and i converted the avi file to a new avi using divx4.The output avi has audio format PCM.Then i tried to converted it to mpg using TMPGEnc and it worked (the sound is just fine).
Firstly when i tried to convert the asf directly to mpg using TMPGEnc and it crashed that was in win xp.I tried the same thing in win me (asf to mpg using TMPGEnc) and i had no problems.So i think that win xp is the problem.
