    Synch problem - large avi?

I have an odd synch problem with a divx avi. If I play the movie straight through, no problem. If I navigate anywhere beyond the first 5 minutes or so of the movie, the video and audio are out of synch, by a lot. I wondered if it was the large size of the avi file, ~2.4 Gigs. I made another avi from the same source at lower bit rate, all other settings the same, creating a ~1.2 gig avi. This smaller avi works fine - I can move anywhere in the movie and the audio synchs fine. I have a 3 Gig P4, 512 mb ram and a Radeon 9800. I've tried BS Player, Windows Media Player and Core Media Player - they all express the same problem.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Windows and many other programs have problems with avi-files bigger than 2 GB. Split the big file in 2 parts using VirtualDUB and play them seperately.

Depending on how the original, larger .AVI was made, the audio may not be interleaved with the video.

As an experiment, load the original, larger .AVI into VirtualDub.
Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copy"
      Save with a new filename

(Since the default for interleaving is "On" in VirtualDub, the new .AVI will be interleaved)

            To Dude22

Splitting with VirtualDub (or any of its variants) or NanDub

1)Load your original (DivX-compressed or otherwise) .AVI into VirtualDub or NanDub
            2) Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying"
            3) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
            4) Move slider to approximate halfway point
            5) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Go to next keyframe"
            6) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End'
            7) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" - Save as a new filename (e.g. "Movie1of2.avi").
            8) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
            9) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Move to End"
            10) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End"
            11) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" - Save as a new filename (e.g. "Movie2of2.avi").

As long as the two files are IDENTICAL regarding ALL aspects of both video and audio, joining two .AVIs can be accomplished in VirtualDub (or any of its variants) by simply:

                1) Loading the first file and then, from the "File" dropdown menu selecting "Append .AVI segment" and loading the second file.

                2) Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copy"

                3) Save with a new filename
