I need some help.

I want all my avi and mpg files to play in windvd but when ever i select which player to use it wont let me pick windvd. how do i fix this. please help its very fustrating.

If the program you wish to use is not listed, you'll have browse for it. There is an option to choose a custom program depending of your current OS.

For windows XP :

1-Select a file with the desired extension, i.e. an AVI file
2-Right-click to display the context menu then select properties.
3-In the General tab, click on the "Change..." button beside the program name in use to open the file; A new window will be showed.
4-If the program you want is not listed, which is probably the case, click on "Browse" button then select it.
5-Repeat from step 1 for other file types.

I had tried that already it didn't work i won't let me select windvd.exe, when i point to the windvd shortcut, i give "....not a vaild windows 32 app.."

You have to select the executable application, shortcuts wont do.

If you have trouble to locate the executable, right-click on the shortcut then select "Properties". In the Shortcut tab, click on the "Find target" button at the bottom of the properties window to locate the real file. Once you located the file, copy the full path found in the Address bar (make sure the Display full path in address bar is on, in the folder settings).

When Windows ask you to locate the application, paste the full path you got previously to go right in the Application folder, then select the executable file.

Btw there is a shorter way to get to browse for applications :
1- Right-click on a file to open the context-menu
2- Select "Open with" menu entry, then "Choose Program"
3- Click on the "Browse" button to seek the application
4- Repeat

it doesn;t work

i tried that when i go to select the c:/program files/intervideo/windvd/windvd.exe

i click it and nothing happens. it just wont' do it

Ok I think I know what you was talking about cause it was working fine 5 minutes ago but now Windows gave me trouble to do it right. I was browsing for the program then selected it but it doesnt showed up in the list.

I had to edit the registry manually to make Windows understand my point...

For an avi file you'll have to edit the following registry key.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AVIFile\shell\play\command
Default = "C:\Program Files\InterVideo\windvd\WinDVD.exe" "%L"

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AVIFile\shell\open\command
Default = "C:\Program Files\InterVideo\windvd\WinDVD.exe" "%L"

You'll have to figurate for the other extensions but it's not that hard. To find the right key for the an Avi file I selected the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT then typed .avi; The defaut value of was AVIFile. I selected HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT again then typed AVIFile to get in the right key.

*edit* I think you could also deleted the entire .avi key and try to open the file again. If you do so, Windows will ask you which program to use as default to open the file. (don't forget to export the registry key before doing it).

Also notice that's really not the normal way to do it
