Help identifying codecs

Evening all, as this is my 1st post i'll get right to it:

I've been DLing films and TV eps for over a year now but i've
never been satisfied with the codec packs ive tried- theres always
1 or 2 important things they've never done right.
My job is as a PC technician so i know the importance of drivers
and a clean copy of windows and so on.

Right now my problem is with 3 .avi files which claim to be encoded to DivX 5.03. I went and DLed version 5.05 which did nothing, then (having had this problem before) i went and got hold of a replacement Xvid core, still no luck.
To narrow it down i deleted all my XviD codecs, but the files still
appear as mostly green with any area of motion smearing through in blocks. I'm certain that its a codec problem, but ive tried all the relevant ones i can think of.
ATM i have tried Nimo builds 8 and 9 and the latest DivX bundle
and the latest Xvid core.

So, kind sirs, any bright ideas as to whats wrong?
Failing that, is there a conversion tool that would do the job?

In order to determine which codec(s) you need for a particular .AVI, you should do the following:

1) Load the video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box


(As an aside, other posters will undoubtedly suggest that you download and install the FFDShow filter as a "cure-all")

Hehe, i tried ffdshow right after making my post having seen, as you said, that it seems to be a cure-all.
