XviD movie outputs no sound in TMPGEnc Plus

I have a movie encoded in XviD with MP3 audio. I want to encode it to a compatible SVCD format using TMPGEnc Plus, but when I do, there is no sound in the output. I tried many different configurations and installing several codecs, but nothing works. Any suggestions?

The file most likely includes a VBR (Variable Bitrate) .MP3 audiostream, which TMPGEnc cannot process:

Simply use NanDub or VirtualDubMOD (Different than standard VirtualDub), to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
Load your original .AVI into NanDub
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose - and choose "No compression(PCM)"
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save WAV" (Enter a new filename with a ".WAV" extender).Click on "OK"
Then save the .AVI as a silent .AVI (set "Audio" to "No audio" after you've saved the WAV file).
Open TMPGEnc and FIRST "drag and drop" the silent .AVI onto it, then do the same with the .WAV file.

I tried this too (with Nandub (version 1.0rc2)), but with no success.. When I click "Save wav" I get two error messages:

ACM failed to suggest audio compression format

AVIOutputWAV: The reference (handle) is not valid

What should I do?

check if the wrapped in audiofile is of true mp3 format
you can do that with Gspot......if it is an VBR mp3 and still
if your virtualdub still does not decode, install the lame acm (0.9XXX)codec.
then follow setarips advice again!!

in case of all those methods fail use the mp3 acm codec along
with "virtualdub mod" to demux your audiofile (refferring to stream-->stramlist -->demux )and decode it
with an external decoder to wav!
....

or refer to stream -->streamlist--->rightclick on audiostream-->
choose compression--->choose "pcm no compression"--->
and save as avi with new filename!!

Actually, I think the audio is AC3, cause it says so in the file name. I'm a newbie when it comes to dealing with video encoding/decoding/compression and so on, so I'm not quite sure how to do the things you suggested. Which programs do I need? Is there any "must-have" of software, to be guaranteed a satisfactory result when dealing with all this stuff (avi, mpeg 2, divx, xvid etc etc)?

For now I have Tmpgenc, Nandub, WinMpg Video Convert and Nero for finally burning the crap on a workable svcd..

In TMPGEnc, under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to the highest priority. This will enable TMPGEnc to accept a properly encoded .AVI with .AC3 audio for input...

Ok, I've realised now that everything must have been the file's fault.. The audio still didn't work, and 20 minutes into the movie, the picture froze, but it still keept encoding.. So I got about 40 minutes of a still picture.

Well, I managed to get the same file as an mpeg2 file, so I won't have to bother with it anymore.. Thanks for all the help though, I'll be likely to check back again the next time I crash into a wall, while converting video...

Btw, is it possible to merge a .sub file with the .avi file when converting to mpg..?

Actually I found that out by myself during big anxiety attacks last night.. I probably did it in a really unnecessary way, but after a crap-load of hours I now have a (2-disc) svcd with subtitles, stemming from an annoying little .avi file..

OMG, you guys are really onto something. I've been having the same problems trying to encode AVI's that are said the have mp3 audio. I tried the Nandub steps that the 2nd post suggested and it was on its way to working but it only records like 5 seconds and then stops Any idea what to do with that? I tried demuxing with VirtualDubMod too and I have a 100meg mp3 VBR file however, I cannot change the format to wav in BeSweet due to some dll being missing ( which is most deffinately not missing...) SO could any of you guys help me ? I got one movie the encode and then for like the past 8 days I havent gotten poo to work HELP MEH! :O

Using VirtualDubMOD to Convert "VBR" .MP3 to Uncompressed .WAV

1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDubMOD (a different program than the standard VirtualDub)

2) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Direct Stream Copy"

3) From the "Streams" dropdown menu, select "Stream List" - and rightclick on the audio stream, then select "Full Processing Mode" - then click on "OK". Rightclick on the audiostream again, then select "Compression" and make certain it is set to "No compression (PCM)"

4) From the "File" dropdown menu, save .AVI with a new filename
