if i download windows media player series 9, will i be able to view the asf file in this, or will I need to download some other software? I tried to view the file in avi preview but no luck.

You should be able to view .ASF files under ol' reliable Windows Media Player v.6.4 (or any version, for that matter)...

yes you will ba able to view asf files with windows mediaplayer 9
but be warned .... it is very hard to get rid of it again.....
my suggestion would be to get wmp 6.x or 7.x along with the codecs from microsoft.
installing the windows media (encoder) filter pack also enables other players to play asf files without any problems.

I recommend BS player or MV2 player

why will it be very hard to get rid of it. cant you just go to control panel, add/remove programs and remove it from there.
you are worrying me now as I have already installed it

^ just get the codecs and it should work. i recommend using media player classic.

it is difficult to uninstall wmp9 as it is not in the add/remove programs tab (typical ms).

thats unusal. it wasn't under my add/remove programs. also i have a feeling if you try to remove it like that it wont let you. you can try for yourself, and let us know how it goes..
