Can DivX and XviD codecs co-exist on the same comp?

Sorry if this sounds so simple but I'm still relatively new to the whole encoding thing.

Can the two codecs co-exist on the same computer? Someone once told they could not co-exist on the same machine since they originally came from the same code-base, thus confusing the computer. Was he just blowing smoke?

Like 2 DivX codecs on the same comp?
Or like 2 Xvid codecs on the same comp?

Yes ofcourse you can have both divx and xvid installed at the same time.

But why as ? when it would have been at least a 100 times haster to simply try it.

I have never had any problems with both DivX and XviD codec being together, having installed them in more than 10 different systems (mine and friends', of course).

Yes. Each codec has its own distinctive "FourCC" code (a four digit alphanumeric) identifier which allows the computer to determine which one should be accessed for a specific procedure/file/video...
