dvdrip avi play back

I downloaded a video file in avi format which read dvdrip.
but not able to play it using windows media or real one etc., do I need any codec to be installed? help

DVDRip simply means that the movie you downloaded was ripped from a DVD.

Apart from the fact that downloading DVDRips are illegal, it also doesn't tell you what kind of AVI file it is, and so what kind of video codec you need to download.

You can use a tool like GSpot to find out what codec your AVI needs :
