    Encoding Question #2

IIts been alittle while since I posted. But Ill try to explain as best I can my problem.

I am currently using Adobe Premeire 6.5 and I really enjoy it(A LOT of features to play with and alittle time consuming but a great program) . My question is this:
Ive been using Premeire to do all my transfer (FROM VHS thru my Mini DV Cam - to my ' puter). After Transfer and editing ,Premiere has the capability to Encode the timeline to be DVD ready (Encoding the AVI into 2 files... 1 WAV file and 1 M2V) files.

IT also has the option of converting my (peiced together avi's ) into 1 LARGE AVI . The options are Microsoft AVI and Microsoft DV AVI.
I converted my files into one large AVI using the Microsoft DV AVI feature. The reason I did this is because on recommendation a friend told me that the program "TMPGEnc" has better encoding than Premeire.
    Here is my problem:
When I try to encode the large MICROSOFT DV AVI file from Premeire into DVD ready files(wav and M2V) I get an error from
    TMPGEnc saying that...
    "myfile.avi cannot open or unsupported"
This ONLY occurs with the VIDEO.. Apparently it can trasfer the Audio into wav but the video gives me the error.
Im using a trial version of TMPGEnc.exe (and I am still under the 30days of mpg usage-)
    Can someone help me please?
    Tibble
P.S. By the way when I convert the file in Premeire to MICROSOFT AVI (not MICROSOFT *DV* AVI) I have no problems converting it..

You need to download and install a DV codec, such as MainConcept or Canopus...

I tried the Canopus Codec (just now) and It didnt seem to work.
Im lookin gfor Mainconcepts. Its seems they have a trial available but It puts a watermark over your product.

Do you know where else I can get a copy of that codec w/o watermarks?

You need to download the AVISynth plugin for premiere. If your focus is on quality, you should avoid at all cost yet another lossy compression on top of your AVI, such as DV.

            The way it works is:

            1. Open your premiere project, save the audio as a PCM WAV
            2. "Save As", and choose the AVISYNTH format
            3. That will save a small file (see AVISYNTH guides for more info)
            4. Open this file with TMPGEnc, as the video source
            5. Open the WAV file as the audio source
            6. Encode using your preferred parameters.

The reason for that is when you are going to encode in a DV format, you are going to loose some quality. This method will frameserve from Premiere to TMPGEnc, hence you will have no loss of quality and no big AVI file on your HDD.

              To pieroxy

While your suggestion to "Tibble" will be perfectly valid for future efforts, you appear to have overlooked "Tibble's" statement that, "I converted my files into one large AVI using the Microsoft DV AVI feature."

Therefore "Tibble" has no choice but to deal with a DV-encoded .AVI file at present...

Well, yes , I made the assumption that he still have the original files AND the adobe premiere project file. What did lead me to that assumtion was his last statement:

By the way when I convert the file in Premeire to MICROSOFT AVI (not MICROSOFT *DV* AVI) I have no problems converting it..

Which makes me think he has tried several different AVI settings to export his premiere project. And since the one he was looking for doesn't work, he has probably kept all the original material by safety. Then - maybe - it is not too late to just frameserve and forget about this big AVI file...

I should have made this assumption more clear

                @Tibble, any progress?
