    DDHELP caused invalid page fault...

    FIC AZ11
    AMD ATHLON 1GHz
    256MB RAM
    VIA AC97 On-board sound
    3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 PCI graphics
    Windows 98
DirectX 5, 7.0, and 8.1 all do the same thing
    DirectMedia 6 was no help
    Hi-Val modem

I am getting a 'DDHELP' crash when I try to play an AVI/DivX
movie using 'Windows Media Player', WindDVD, PowerVCR and
    others:

"DDHELP caused an invalid page fault in module WINMM.DLL..."

If I disable the sound from windows the movie plays fine, though
no sound, so I'm pretty sure that it is not a graphics card
    problem.

    1) I did a complete system re-install. Installed DivX codec 4.12

    2) When I double-clicked on the DivX AVI 'Windows Media Player'
would play the movie fine but WITHOUT any sound.

    3) So, I installed the 'Radium' audio codec and then
double-clicked on the DivX AVI again and:

"DDHELP.DLL caused an invalid page fault in module
    WINMM.DLL..."

    4) 'Start' -> 'Programs' -> 'Accessories' -> 'Entertainment' ->
'Media Player' and load the DivX AVI and it plays fine WITH sound.

    Lessons learned:

    A) The DivX movie that I play has MP3 audio.
    B) 'Media Player' plays movie fine, 'Windows Media Player' does NOT.
    C) There is a problem with playing MP3 audio in the DivX movie.

*** The odd thing is that "Media Player" does NOT have this
problem, ONLY 'Windows Media Player', which is the one set to
automatically load AVI files, and the other players.

Is the problem with the VIA sound drivers or Windows98?

    You tell me; Please.

    thanks

i reckons its with your video card drivers and/or directx version.
    update all your drivers.
i dont believe ddhelp is an audio or OS problem.

does it only do this with DivX 4.12 or with 3.11 also????
do you have both codecs installed???
if so, did you ask 4.12 to play 3.11 content???

also try using media player 6.4..... To open it go to start....run....mplayer2.exe .....enter, then open your avi within mediaplayer.
a little bit is better than nada.
sometimes you want the whole enchilada.

      1) I first thought is was the video drivers also until I discovered
that the movies play just fine without sound enabled.

This really surprised me since I was certain that DDHELP
      was strictly a DirectX/DirecDraw program.

      2) It does the same thing with both DivX versions.

      3) I currently have only version 4.12 installed.

      4) Yes, 4.12 is set to play 3.11 content.

      5) ALL programs cause this problem except two, 'Media Player'
      and 'Playa':

'WinDVD', 'PowerVCR', 'Media Player' 6.4, 7.1 all cause the
      same problem.

      ---------------------
As stated above I have tried DX5, DX7.0, DX8.1, and
'Media Player 7.1'. After a full system re-install of course.

I also have the latest drivers for my graphics card and sound.

I am convinced that this is a sound problem in spite of the
'DDHELP' message since all DivX movies play nicely without sound.

So its either my sound/drivers or Windows98.

      thanks for the reply,
