Need to convert mpeg4 to avi

Hope someone can help me-thought video file was entirely avi but couldn't get audio to play only video.Then checked and found out it was mpeg4 and avi?.I believe the reason I can't hear audio is that I don't have the right codec. Anyway before I spend hrs encoding it I'd like to hear the audio during palyback. Can some suggesr where or how to convert mpeg4 to avi or something I can encode and burn later, Hope this is the right forum for this-if Not I appologize.

mpeg4 is a generic video codec (divx, xvid, MS-mpeg4 are examples of mpeg4 codecs)
avi is just a container that can include one video stream and one audio stream.
so it's not cl;ear what you want to do.
as for audio playback, load the file in gspot to see what audio codec is used
