Avi file encoded with wmv8 playback problem

    Hi
I have an avi file that is encoded with wmv8 codec that i cant play it.I try'd to open this file with wmp 9 but wont work.I think i have the right codecs installed on my system.WMV8DS32.AX AND WMVDS32.AX are installed on my system. This are the right codecs?I have downloaded from this site the stigmata.wmv thriler that is a wmv8 file and i can play it right.I have try'd to open this avi file that gives me trouble with virtual dub but it says that could'nt locate decompressor for format 'wmv2' (unknown).I have renamed the avi to asf and try'd to open in virtual dub 1.3 that have support for asf files but i have get the same errorr message. Is this avi file corupted or why i cant play it?Maybe it is incomplete? There is a soft for repaire avi files or to wach incomplete avi parts? Thanks for your answer in advance

I can't help much more than to suggest you download GSpot and paste the file information window for your avi here. Others should be able to help from there.

I looked up another thread http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...e&pagenumber=2 which was similar. There's a link in the last post to a tool that may prove useful.

Many thanks for your help but that soft it was with no use for me.This avi file was surely converted from a wmv file to an avi file and thats why im unable to play it.There is a soft that can open this file and to convert it back to a .wmv.With virtual dub i get this message : "Could'nt locate decompressor for format wmv2" and that "virtual dub requires a video for windows (vfw)compatible codec to decompress video.Direct show codecs, such as those used by windows media player are not suitable".Anyone know from where to get a vfw codec that support wmv2 format files??

Well, here's the problem. WMV8 is locked into the ASF file format. I believe that the guy who made the file ran the original ASF (WMV8) through ASFTools into a AVI file (WMV8). So the only way (IMHO) to play this file is to run the data back into a ASF file format. I don't know how you would do something like that. Maybe you can re-encode it using WM Encoder, with quality loss.

              Hi
Windows Media Encoder cant open my file to re-encode it to asf.It says that ....avi it's not a valid source file,it may have an unsuported or invalid format or may be corupted.Anyone have another idea or this file is lost forever?
