How do I set the codec to be used for playback ?

    Hi,

by now I probably have 2-5 different codecs for most formats installed, and since gspot 2.5 isn't out yet (which is supposed to do just what I need), I need your help.

I have two computers, all have more or less the same codecs installed, but in different order. One can play one of my videos, the other has sound problems.

When testing with gspot, the computers use different codecs to play the same audio (AC3).

I could probably use regsvr32 to temporarily disable codecs and I played with it for a while, but I have no clue what I am doing.

    1. How can I change priority for codecs to make certain the right one is used for playback ?

    2. Are there any tutorials about how to deal with codecs, how to change priority, disable them, how having multiple codecs affect the system and playback etc. ?

    Thanks!

Just keep the best ones i.e. the ones that work for you and uninstall the rest.

But couldn't there be files that require one version of a codec while another files requires a different one ?

I read in a file that came with a video that it requires the original XVid v1 codec and ffdshow xvid support disabled - which may only work for this one file.

So I believe there must be a solution to temporarily change the priority or to temporarily disable codecs.

After all, the author of gspot says that version 2.5 should be able to do it (once it is available).

Besides: I am not sure I even know how I installed many of my codecs (yea, I am a big mess, and so is my PC *g*)

You should be able to do this through Windows Media Player Classic (wmp-c). I have done this so wmp-c uses the cyberlink (poweverdvd) filter to decode mpeg2, and it works. Just goto:

        View-Options-Filters-Overrides

Here add ALL the filters and place them in order of priority. That should be it.

          Cool, thanks!

Took me a minute to find the player, but I got it now and will try your advice tonight after work!

          Thanks a lot )

No problem. Just remember to add all the filters that do the same job you want (e.g. decode ac3) and then put them in order.

              I will, thanks!

Will that change the priority for all players or is that internal for Media Player Classic ?

Will it play DivX files that WMP won't play properly but DivX Player will ?

It should do. Its much much much better them WMP. Classic is not related to microsoft. Just looks similar.
