Is any one of the Xvid codecs better than the other (ie. fewer bugs, crashes, etc)? Are videos encoded with one Xvid codec playable with the other Xvid codec?
In my opinion, the more liable Xvid codec is FFDShow. It's also a very good DivX codec.
FFDShow is a liable OpenSource project, so don't be afraid of viruses of other surprises that you could find in codec packages...
FFDShow is a decoder only. It can decode the various versions of DivX as well as XviD. It cannot however do compression and hence why it cannot be called a codec.
Unless they have fixed it (which i think they might have) quarter pixel was'nt good at all in the early koepi XviD codecs. I found that nic's was stable when having quarter pixel enabled while koepi's seemed to move around the screen. But like i say koepi have brung out a few new versions so these might have improved when it comes to this feature. Saying all this i have encoded a few thing's with koepi's new releases (RC1, RC2) and both have looked great without quarter pixel, so i'm going to try them with quarter pixel and see what they look like. I read on the doom9 forum that having quarter pixel is supposed to reduce the bitrate on most thing's whether this is true i don't know.
Sorry, you're right, I didn't noticed that FFDShow was a decoder only. When I said "liable", I meant "reliable" (english is not my native language...).
