    playing movies with low volume

A lot of DivX/mp3-DVD-ripps in my collection have a very low volume. On my home-computer that's not a big problem because I connected my soundcard to a good amplifier. But if I play them on my laptop or on other computers without good amplifiers the volume is much to low even if I set it to the maximum. Is there any way to increase the volume without additional hardware. I don't want to normalize and reencode the audio, what I'm looking for is a tool like a volume-control-software that can set the volume higher 100%. Even better would be a volume-control that only increases the volume on quiet scenes automaticly.

All versions of VirtualDub starting with 1.4D include a "Volume" control under the "Audio" tab...

      I said "without reencoding".

Sorry, I misinterpreted your statement as meaning you just didn't want to have to BOTH normalize and reencode the audio.

Just curious as to why you would feel so negative about using this simple and fairly short (timewise) method of permanently improving your files, which could be done with a job list.

It's just for my laptop and other computers with bad amplifiers. If you normalize a wav that is ripped from a DVD, the voices still very quiet because there are also very loud parts like explosions. On a good home-theatre it's really no problem because you can turn up the volume to hear the voices loud enough and have extremly loud explosions. With headphones or weak amplifiers the explosions are OK, but the voices are to quiet even if you set the volume to 100%. So I'm looking for a tool that can increase the volume to 200% or more. It must be kind of a windows-driver that connects between the video-player and the soundcard-driver.

At the risk of upsetting you, although I don't mean to harp, as far as I know, VirtualDub's "Volume" merely allows for amplification - and performs NO normalization. So wouldn't this satisfy your stated purpose (It certainly wouldn't negatively impact your listening pleasure on a home theater setup, but would enhance it for laptops, etc.)?

have u tried sasami 2k player? (find it here: http://www.sasami2k.com/ )

u can easily use "audio filter" make it louder several times

one notice: that player works just fine on my pc using win2000, but a friend of me has installed it in win me and had some problems so he had to delete sasami to let win work without probs again, but that player is just fine (u can also use smooth and sharpen filters (only if it makes sense))

Sasami seems to be the perfect player for me (except I still haven't found if it can play an alternative language from an other wav file). It's as fast (or faster) as "The Playa" and seems to be perfect in sync. It also works on my laptop and an old 300MHz celeron with really good sound-quality even with very high volume.
