Some xvid movies plays choppy in almost all players but VLC

    Hi,

I have some Xvid movies that are giving me trouble. Playback using BSPlayer, Core MP, WMP etc. is slightly choppy, just enough to be annoying.
When i play the same file in VLC there are no problems at all, playback is smooth. I would however like to play the files in the other players as VLC doesnt work with VobSub subtitles.
I have tried uinstalling Xvid(RC4 btw) and letting DivX handle it, but still the same trouble. VLC doesnt seem to use either the DivX or XVid codec i have installed, as playback there doesnt show the DivX icon, and i have tried flipping the video in Xvid to be able to see when it was used for playback, and it wasnt flipped when i played the file in VLC(but it was in for example WMP).

Any ideas about what could be wrong? All my DivX movies plays normally in all players, its only a problem with XVid and only with about half the movies(there doesnt seem to be any correlation to the sound codec used either).

Gspot has this to say about my installed codecs:

I know VLC uses it's own codecs so it would seem like a codec problem with the other players. I would uninstall the problem codec and try a re-install. I use xvid RC3.

I have already tried installing/reinstalling codecs, it doesnt help. I just tried XVid RC3, which didnt improve anything either.

Thanks for the suggestion though. Any other ideas? Is there an easy way to remove all codecs/preferences etc, and start from scratch( except for reinstalling windows)?

You can go to device manager and disable the codecs 1 by 1 and see if you fing the problem codec.

I think ill just try removing them all, and then just adding the XVid codec alone to see if it helps.

Anyway i think ill reinstall windows/linux again soon, so ill hope to clear it up by the. Should i avoid installing codec packs after i reinstall btw?

I would stay away from codec packs. Some/alot of ppl seem to have conficts with codec packs. I install only xvid and divx unless I absolutely need a specific codec. You can d/l the divx playback only codec from the tools section here www.dvdrhelp.com It doesn't have all the extra junk. This is the one I use with no problems.
P.S. Some ppl have had to format and do a clean install after installing a codec pack. Can't remember the name of the codec pack that caused the problems, but if you do a search for codec packs at dvdrhelp you should find it. Video Sniper was an excellent tool for finding all codecs and allowing you to remove them from your system but I haven't seen it for quite awhile.
Divx Light Codec is the one I use.
