    Video files skipping in WinXP

Hello and thanks in advance for any help...

I am having a problem playing all video types in WinXP. Both DVD and DivX/Mpeg/WMV files will play, but about every 30-45 seconds the video frames will skip for 1 or 2 seconds. This problem just started a few weeks ago, and I can't seem to find any solution to this annoyance. The audio from all video types plays perfectly, and I have downloaded all the codec packages I can find. When this happens with a DVD, the HDD light is not illuminated.

When I first encountered this problem, I reformatted and re-installed Windows, but that didn't help the problem.

Someone told me to disable Windows Messanger (not Instant Messanger) and that did not help any. Also, I have found that if I disable Norton Auto-protect, the video skips less when being played off the HDD, but doesn't stop skipping completely.

If anyone could give me suggestions on how to fix this, that would be much appreciated!!! Thanks again.

there is a chance it could be spy-ware... download a program called "ad-aware". if it is not because of spyware, try installing the latest "ffdshow" codec.
