I've been at this a while but I'm stumped. Suddenly I can't play mpeg2 content I've created. It doesn't matter whether It's captured through my AIW with MMC 9 or re-encoded downloaded mpegs or avi's with TMPGEnc, it won't play. Downloaded files or those I created a month ago, fine. Created in the last few weeks, no go. The files captured or encoded authors onto DVD just fine. Pinnacle and TMPGEnc DVD Author will both put these files on DVD which plays flawlessly. I did install mmc 9 recently but I also reinstalled TMPGEnc, and WinMedPlyr 9. I get a message in WinMedPlyr "error downloading codec". It shouldn't need to download a codec for mpeg1 or 2. Short of deleting and re-installing a crapload of software including mmc, does anyone have any ideas.
Suddenly can't play mpeg2???

Sounds like whatever MPEG2 codec Windows Media Player had been using has become corrupted. However, if you are saying that DVDs play properly under WMP (as opposed to a DVD software player such as WinDVD), I'd suggest that (since the DVD .VOB files are nothing more than enhanced MPEG2 files) your problem lies in how you are initially creating your basic (NOT DVD compliant) MPEG-2 files... -
Thanks
Thanks, I'm working on the problem. Those files won't play on my PowerBook either so some something's definitely wrong with the codecs. I'm deleting everything I can find and reinstalling it. I tried just replacing the MS media codecs but still have the same problem. I'm just VERY fortunate that those files would burn to DVD because I assumed it was a play only problem and deleted some irreplacable stuff. I'll probably be back for more help. I hope not but Murphy is God.Comment

Murphy IS God. I reinstalled everything and got the same results. However, when I re-installed MMC 9 I got a message saying there is no DVD decoder installed and I may experience DVD/MPEG2 playback problems. I've gotten this same message with each previous incarnation of MMC since they took away my DVD option in v. 6 or so. But it just means when I stick a DVD in the drive MMC won't play it. I thought. I downloaded Moonlight mpeg2 player and it plays those files just fine. Guess what, so does Windows and MMC! Is it possible MMC disabled mpeg2 playback by all programs? Moonlight is a shareware. What happens when it expires? Do I lose mpeg2 again? But that doesn't explain why mpeg2 files created before installing MMC9 would play.
Anybody have any idea what's going on?!?!?!?Comment
