    Trouble with mpeg playback

First, sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I couldn't see a clear 'mpeg' section to put it in.

Anyway, I have trouble playing back any mpegs, no matter how they're encoded. AVIs work great, it only seems to be files with the mpg extension. They seem to play normally in Zoomplayer and PowerDVD, but any other player shows a black screen with a single frame popping up about twice a second. Sound is fine. They'll convert succesfully with TEMPEnc, but the resulting mpeg has the same problem. Same happens when AVIs are converted to mpeg.

I have ffdshow installed, with the K-Lite codec pack, which is usually enough to play anything. Any ideas?

Sounds like your bitrate or framerate is wrong. When you say they play ok on PowerDVD do you mean the avi? Do the mpeg play in it as PowerDVD is one of the choice apps for testing before burning to DVD.

Just checked PowerDVD and it's a bit weird. It plays mpegs, where other players won't, but it won't play AVIs, showing the same problem mpegs do in other players.

Zoomplayer is the only thing that will play both normally.

I don't use PowerDVD. I use WinDVD, the other choice tool for testing mpegs. That specifically only plays mpegs I'm fairly certain.
What are you aiming to achieve?

Just to restore playback to all of Windows. This is affecting any piece of software that plays mpegs, so I really need it fixed.

If Zoomplayer plays both AVIs and MPEGs and PowerDVD plays MPEGS I'm not sure what you want. If the other players did play before, I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling or if you have XP you could try a system restore to before things went wrong.

What are the particular players that you have used that WON'T play the mpegs?
