Best Codec, Compression Wise.

Anyone here know what they think is the best codec compression wise, and maybe best quality as well. Please don't say DivX though. So far i have tried VP6.2 which i think is absolutely stunning, but the only thing with this codec is it crashes the player when i hit the slider marker for a point in the film. Real10 you have to convert to a lossless avi and then back to lossy avi to get the film you want. So really all i want is a codec that is excellent for compression that you can go straight from vob to avi, and maybe also has great looking video as well.

xvid is just about the only codec i use for dvd--->avi... in my opinion, the best codec there is for compression/quality/speed... beats divx in all three areas
