Really frustrating problem with playback. Help PLEASE!!

    Hi all,

I have a really annoying problem with video playback. Most of the time, when i play a video file, the playback will become suddenly "corrupted". By this i mean that sometimes the screen will go green, sometimes the video will still display but go very choppy (about 1 fps) but the audio continues normally, sometimes both vid and audio go mad. When this happens, closing the file can take anything from a couple of seconds to "a fist through screen" 5 minutes.

It used to only happen with divx/xvid files on the old version of media player, so I grudgingly switched to the bloated new windows media player. Every thing was ok for a while but since i installed the latest version of WMP, ALL formats of video (including DVDs) go mad on all players. I've tried playing a variety of formats thru old media player, WMP, realplayer, quicktime and powerDVD and all display the above symptoms randomly. This is not like the common green screen error some ppl get as the vid usually starts out fine but after a while goes wrong.

I've tried using ffdshow (about 5 diff versions), divx pro (5.02, 5.1 and 5.20), 3ivx, nimo pack and probably some others i can't remember but still the problem persists.

As u can imagine it's not much fun when ur trying to watch a film for it to suddenly act up, have to be shut down (taking 5 mins) and restarted and then to find the same place again only for it to go mad again 20 seconds later.

Please can someone help me, i've scoured the net for someone with similar probs but to no avail.

Many thanks to anyone who can assist

"but after a while goes wrong"

Sounds like your system may be overheating...

      Thanks for the reply,

I've recently replaced my case and power supply due to heat problems. The replacements have brought the cpu and gfx card heat down by around 9 degrees each and ambient temp down by 5. All of them seem to be within the normal temperature ranges i've found on the net now.

I think personally it's codec or driver related as I once got vids to run fine. Can't remember what particular drivers i was using then though but it was in the old overheated system.

Last night i replaced my sound drivers to see if that would make a difference (maybe the sound was interfering with the vid somehow) but still nothing

I'm at a loss to explain it.

Keep the ideas coming though, any help is appreciated m8

If your O/S is WinXP, simply perform a "System Restore" back to the last time "things were right"...

          Doh,

Nice idea, but the reason things went wrong again was because I formatted and reinstalled windows about 6 months ago. I reinstalled all the drivers i could remember having before but the problem came back anyway. Grrrrr

Keep trying though, 3rd time lucky
