converting mov files

I borrowed an Olypus camera to take some short video clips. when i copy them to the pc the vid clips are mov files, but i cannot play them and i want to send them to a couple of other people, so i downloaded the rad tools to convert them to avi or something so i can make vcd or just email as are. when i try to open with rad tools i get "Error opening" file message, i want to be able to send and have friends be able to play without special software.

Use TMPGEnc with the QTReader plugin to convert to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2...

thanks i got radtools to work after installing quicktime. what is the best formay to convert to and what compression
