Large AVI's refuse to play in any program!

Hi this has been happenning for a while now and its really starting to bug me. No matter what program i use, (realplayer, WMP10, microdvd, thecore, winamp etc..) it always opens up to the size of the video screen, says how long the video is on the bar like its about to play but then all of a sudden i get an error and it shuts the program down. My hardware is a P4 1.8ghz, nvidia geforce2 mx and its running on xp home edition with sp2 installed. Please give me some suggestions i hate this.

Perform a "System Restore" back to the last time "things were working properly"...
