Problems with Divx playback on DVD/DIVX Player

Not sure is this is the correct place to post but anyway....

I recently got myself a DVD/DIVX player from Lidl (Don't Laugh) its made by silvercrest. The player is fine with DVD playback but divx playback is very jerky and the quality is poor.

I was wondering if anyone here knows of anything I can try to help this problem or have I purchased a cheap piece of crap that just isn't up to the job.

I have the same problem as you with almost every MPEG-4 (DivX or XviD) file I have tried in my *compliant* player!

Mine wasn't expensive but DK-Digital is renowned for budget quality in Europe and the reviewers stated it was especially good at playing varying formats and media...ha...ha!....
...I have only been able to get a set of low bit-rate DivXs to play 'watchably' and 1 high bit-rate XviD out of about 20 different MPEG-4 sources.

All the files I've tried are smooth when played on the PC and I'm talking 'latest' files from popular sources so I'm seriously 'peed' about my 1 in 10 standalone success rate!

Until I saw the high bit-rate file working I simply assumed the standalones processor wasn't up to the decode but surely that can't be true?
Also, I'm sure it wouldn't have got such glorious reviews (50+ of them!) if that were the case.

    Possibilities:

    1. Quirky Media?
I've been using CD-R's but I'm going to try putting a couple of the 'jerkies' on a DVD-R because I know the player doesn't 'mechanically stutter' reading the DVD-Rs I've got at the moment so that will rule the CD-R media out.
[However, my playback problems don't seem mechanical because they are distinctly affected by the amount of 'movement within scene' in the content.]

    2. Quirky burning software?
My CD-Rs were done using good old XP drag 'n' drop. Going to do the DVD-R testing using a *real* burning app.

    3. Quirky burner?
Hope not. I researched and paid good money for a decent *and/or* branded one (Pioneer 108).

    4. I've heard some DivXs aren't created *properly* and are not compliant with the strict codec implementations used in standalone players (even though they play fine on a PC).
    a/ Anyone know about this?
b/ Can we check or *fix* files intended to work on standalone players?

    4. Other people just don't care about the jerkiness and are simply impressed they don't have to lug their tower to the living room!!!!
    [UNLIKELY?]

Let me know if you get anywhere with your probs...

P.S. Lidl will do a 'no quibble' exchange I would have thought!!!

      I got it cracked

It must be the media cause every divx and xvid ive tried from dvd+r media (only blank dvd's I have) is working fine. I used NERO to burn them aswell btw.

I also found this link to a firmware upgrade

Tenzor: nejrychlejší hosting pro wordpress, webhosting a registrace domén

All of the instructions are in a different language but basically dl the nrg file and use nero to burn it. Then fire it in yer dvd player. It will ask you to press play to install new update. Press play and it will load then eject the disk. Wait for about 30secs and the player will reset and your firmware is updated.

      Hope this info helps.

P.S. I've tried bulkpaq dvd+r (expensive ones) and Phoenix (very cheap ones) and both are fine, so im guessing the player don't like cds

        More Bloody Problems but Fixed

Just to keep ppl informed the player was causing me more problems again. I have fixed the problem of jerky playback by having to recode all the films to divx 5.2.1 with a bit rate of bout 900kbps burt more should be ok and the audio to mp3 44100 and 64kbps I think the problem is the player doesn't like xvid and mp3 codec together. Xvid and AC3 is fine but if yer sound track is xvid and mp3 then you'll need to recode to divx video
